PRACTICAL GUIDANCE
Plan connectivity before you need it
Make sure maps, messages and bookings remain accessible when networks differ.
Check your actual device and plan
Ask your mobile provider whether roaming in mainland China is included, which networks it uses, whether calls and SMS work, and what happens at the data limit. For a travel SIM or eSIM, confirm device compatibility, activation timing and whether a phone number is included.
Prepare an offline layer
Mainland internet access is regulated and some familiar services are blocked. Download essential information before you travel.
- Save your first hotel’s Chinese name, address, phone number and booking confirmation.
- Download translation resources and offline maps where the app offers them.
- Save train and flight details, insurance contacts and recovery codes securely.
- Keep access to the phone number used by your bank and travel accounts for verification.
- Test your intended communication channel with a companion before departure.
Use services lawfully and securely
The FCDO notes that online products and services, including VPNs, are subject to Chinese licensing rules. We do not promise that a VPN or roaming product will bypass restrictions. Follow local law and your provider’s terms. Avoid entering sensitive information into unfamiliar captive portals or downloading unofficial app installers.
Useful questions
Does an eSIM always include local calls and SMS?
No. Many products are data-only. Check the exact plan and keep a way to receive the verification messages you need.
Will hotel Wi-Fi solve every connectivity problem?
No. It may require registration and is still subject to local network conditions and access restrictions. Keep important details offline.
