PRACTICAL GUIDANCE
Book a stay and understand registration
Confirm your accommodation details and who will register your arrival.
Ask specific questions before paying
Choose a property that can process your actual identity document and arrival time. If a booking page is unclear, contact the property through its official channel. Ask about passport check-in, accessibility, late arrival and the Chinese address. Do not rely on a blanket “foreigners allowed” label.
Who registers your stay?
Hotels register foreign guests with the local authorities. For a private home or other non-hotel stay, you or your host must register within 24 hours of arrival. A booking confirmation does not replace accommodation registration.
For a private home or rental
The NIA’s September 2026 guidance confirms nationwide online registration. Ask your host to help with the first registration and prepare your passport and full address.
- Open the NIA Government Service Platform website, NIA 12367 app, or its WeChat or Alipay mini program.
- Complete identity verification, then choose Accommodation Registration under Foreigner Service.
- Save your completed record from Registration Record Inquiry.
- If you move or return to an address, check with NIA whether you need to register again.
- For help, call 12367 or visit a local police station or exit-entry service window.
Useful questions
Does visa-free entry remove the registration requirement?
No. The NIA guidance applies to foreign visitors staying in China, including those entering without a visa.
Does the hotel need to keep my passport for the entire stay?
Present the original for the required check-in process. Ask the property to explain any request to retain it; keep the travel document available for your own identification and journeys.
