PRACTICAL GUIDANCE
Find the right entry pathway
Distinguish an ordinary visa, a visa waiver and a transit arrangement before you book.
Start with the full set of questions
Nationality is only one part of entry eligibility. Your document type, purpose, intended stay, arrival date, route and nationality history can all matter. The checker covers a sourced subset of ordinary-passport rules and explicitly returns confirmation needed for uncovered cases.
If you need a visa
Use the embassy or visa centre responsible for your legal place of residence. For the US embassy’s inspected process, applicants submit information and supporting documents online and follow the status instructions before presenting original documents. Other jurisdictions can differ.
- Check the correct visa category and consular jurisdiction.
- Read the current document list on that authority’s website. Requirements for passport validity, photographs and supporting evidence are application-specific.
- Prepare an accurate application and follow any request for additional information.
- When your passport is returned, check the name, validity, allowed entries and permitted duration before travel.
If using an exemption
Read the exact scheme. A 30-day ordinary-passport waiver and 240-hour transit have different eligibility and itinerary requirements. Travel beyond a published expiry date needs a new check. Work, study and journalism generally require the appropriate separate approval or visa; do not treat a visitor result as permission for those activities.
Documents to keep accessible
Carry your passport and the evidence relevant to your entry basis, such as onward transport, accommodation or an invitation. Border inspection decides entry. The checker never guarantees boarding or admission.
Useful questions
Do US passport holders have the same 30-day waiver shown for UK and Canadian passports?
The inspected unilateral-waiver FAQ does not list the United States. For a normal tourism visit, follow the visa application route unless a separately verified transit, regional or other exemption applies.
Why can a listed nationality still receive “confirmation needed”?
The travel date may be outside the source validity, the document or purpose may be unsupported, or your itinerary may require checks this dataset cannot perform.
