PRACTICAL GUIDANCE
If your passport is lost or stolen
Work through local reporting, consular replacement and your permission to depart.
Secure the immediate situation
If you are in danger or a theft is in progress, call police 110. Otherwise, retrace the last safe location and contact the hotel or transport provider’s official lost-property service. Keep a record of when and where the document was last seen.
Use the official recovery sequence
Replacement and exit requirements depend on your nationality and original entry status.
- Report the loss through the local authorities and obtain the reporting evidence they provide.
- Contact your own embassy or consulate for replacement passport or emergency-document instructions.
- Contact NIA 12367 or the local exit-entry administration about your entry record, remaining permitted stay and any required exit or stay formalities.
- Keep copies of the report, replacement document and official instructions together.
- Contact airlines, rail operators and hotels to update bookings or ask about accepted replacement documents.
Do not assume a replacement document is enough
The inspected embassy FAQ provides a pathway for some visa-free visitors to leave after identity and entry-record checks, but conditions apply. Different entry schemes and documents can require extra processing. Confirm your own case before changing a departure ticket.
Useful questions
Can I just go to the airport with an emergency passport?
Do not assume that. Ask your consulate and the Chinese exit-entry authority what is required for your nationality, document and entry status.
Will a scan help?
A secure scan can help the authorities identify the original document, but it is not itself a valid replacement passport or permission to travel.
